📚 Basic Plurals

In English, we usually add -s to make a noun plural. But there are some spelling rules.

En inglés, normalmente añadimos -s para hacer el plural. Pero hay algunas reglas de ortografía.

1. General Rule: Add -s

Most words follow this rule.

La mayoría de palabras siguen esta regla.

Singular Plural Spanish
Car Cars Coches
Book Books Libros
Apple Apples Manzanas
Day Days Días

2. Words ending in -ch, -sh, -s, -x: Add -es

If the word ends in these sounds, we need an extra syllable.

Si la palabra termina en estos sonidos, necesitamos una sílaba extra.

Singular Plural Spanish
Bus Buses Autobuses
Box Boxes Cajas
Watch Watches Relojes
Brush Brushes Cepillos

3. Consonant + y: Change to -ies

If a word ends in a consonant + y, remove the 'y' and add -ies.

Si una palabra termina en consonante + y, quita la 'y' y añade -ies.

Singular Plural Spanish
Baby Babies Bebés
Family Families Familias
City Cities Ciudades

⚠️ Watch out! If it ends in Vowel + y, just add -s (Day -> Days).

4. Irregular Plurals (Common)

Some words do not follow the rules.

Algunas palabras no siguen las reglas.

Singular Plural Spanish
Man Men Hombres
Woman Women Mujeres
Child Children Niños
Person People Personas
