Future: Will vs. Going To

💡 Key Points

Both are used to talk about the future, but they have different uses:

1. Going To (Plans and Intentions)

  • Used for prior plans: Decisions made before the moment of speaking.
  • Used for predictions based on evidence: When you see something clearly about to happen.
  • Example (Plan): "I am going to build a robot this weekend." (He decidido esto antes).
  • Example (Evidence): "Look at those clouds! It is going to rain." (Veo las nubes, es evidente).

2. Will (Spontaneous Decisions and Promises)

  • Used for spontaneous decisions: Decisions made at the moment of speaking.
  • Used for promises and offers.
  • Used for general predictions / opinions.
  • Example (Moment): "Wait, the phone is ringing. I will answer it!" (Decisión ahora mismo).
  • Example (Promise): "I will help you with your code." (Promesa/Ofrecimiento).
  • Example (Opinion): "I think computers will be even smarter in 10 years." (Opinión personal).

📝 Examples

  • I'm going to the gym later. (Plan previo)
    • Spanish Translation: Voy a ir al gimnasio más tarde.
  • I will have a coffee, please. (Decisión en el momento, pidiendo en un bar)
    • Spanish Translation: Tomaré un café, por favor.
  • Technology will change our lives. (Predicción general)
    • Spanish Translation: La tecnología cambiará nuestras vidas.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Using "will" for plans: "Next week I will visit my family" (❌) -> "Next week I am going to visit my family" (✅).
  • Forgetting the "be" verb in "going to": "I going to build..." (❌) -> "I am going to build..." (✅).
